The New York State Lantern Slides Collection
This collection of lantern slides was created by the New York State Education Department’s Division of Visual Instruction (DVI) as instructional aides for the public school curriculum. The images provide a contemporary view of New York’s landscape, inhabitants, and activities between 1856 and 1939. The images document unique, contemporary scenes in factories, schools, and agricultural settings as well as scenery, sites, structures, and other human activities.
