Interns
Student interns may be an effective and relatively inexpensive way of furthering local preservation activities. Students pursuing degrees in history, archives, library science, historic preservation, architectural history, architecture, landscape architecture, and related fields are often required to participate in an internship or are interested in getting some experience in their field of interest. To find interns, contact colleges and universities for information on possible internship programs. Place a help-wanted item in a local newspaper a few weeks before spring, summer or winter breaks, or post a flyer at the local college or university.
COMPUTERS FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
Companies and organizations that need the fastest and most powerful computers -hospitals, accounting firms, banks-upgrade frequently, putting older and slower computers in storage rooms. A phone call or letter from a board member or the director of your institution, stating your need for a computer, may result in a donation.
Check the surplus department of your county, town or local government to see if it has a preference for non-profit organizations receiving surplus computers on the same basis as other government agencies.
Some national organizations facilitate the transfer of computers from businesses to non-profit organizations. A periodic check of the Internet will update the following list:

Accountants for the Public Interest (API) is the national nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage accountants to volunteer their time and expertise to nonprofits, small businesses and individuals who need, but cannot afford professional accounting. Accounting volunteers provide Direct Services (assisting with tax preparation, preparing for an annual audit, establishing record keeping systems and setting up or computerizing an accounting system), Advisory Services (financial management; budgets, cash flow forecasts; and loan applications), Community Affairs Services (workshops on a variety of financial topics; serving on a nonprofit's Board of Directors; and advising local governmental agencies on accounting, tax, budget and other financial issues).
