10/14/2009 New York State Archives Awards $5.7 Million to Care for Public Records

ALBANY— Commissioner of Education David Steiner has announced that the New York State Archives awarded approximately $5.7 million in grants to hundreds of local governments and community organizations across the state. These awards are intended to help those governments and organizations care for the records in their custody.


10/06/2009 Radez Elementary School Students Win State Archives Award

Albany, NY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected Joseph B. Radez Elementary School students as the recipients of the 2009 Laura and Robert Chodos Award for Excellence in Student Research Using Historical Records, Grades 4-5 for their entry “Battle of Cobleskill 1778.”

Albany, NY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected the City of Saratoga Springs to receive the 2009 Cheryl Steinbach Annual Archives Award for Excellence in Local Government Records Management.

10/06/2009 Doane Stuart School Student Wins State Archives Award

Albany, NY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected The Doane Stuart School student Brendan Blendell as the recipient of the 2009 Laura and Robert Chodos Award for Excellence in Student Research Using Historical Records, Grades 9-12 for his entry “Alan Lomax: Saga of a Folksong Hunter.”

Albany, NY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected the Backbone Ridge History Group of Seneca and Schuyler Counties to receive the 2009 Debra E. Bernhardt Annual Archives Award for Excellence in Documenting New York’s History.

10/06/2009 Town of De Kalb Historian Wins State Archives Award

Albany, NY -- The Board of Regents and the State Archives have selected Bryan Thompson, the Town of De Kalb Historian, to receive the 2009 Bruce W. Dearstyne Annual Archives Award for Excellence in the Educational Use of Local Government Records. This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding initiative, leadership, and creativity in encouraging and promoting the use of local government historical records for elementary and secondary education.

10/06/2009 Stony Brook University Wins State Archives Award

Albany, NY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected the Stony Brook University Special Collections and University Archives to receive the 2009 Annual Archives Award for Program Excellence in a Historical Records Repository.
The award will be presented to Stony Brook University President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley, Jr., Library Director Christian Filstrup, and Head of the Special Collections and University Archives Kristen J. Nyitray at a luncheon ceremony at the Cultural Education Center in Albany on October 26, 2009.

ALBANY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected Albany County Clerk Thomas Clingan to receive the 2009 William Hoyt Annual Archives Award for Advocacy.

Albany, NY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected Westchester County to receive the 2009 William H. Kelly Annual Archives Award for Excellence in Local Government Archival Program Development.

10/01/2009 New York State Archives Launches Innovative New Tool for Educators

Albany, NY -- Students, researchers, and lovers of New York State history from around the world will have a better sense of the types of records held by the New York State Archives with the launch of Document Showcase, a quarterly feature on the New York State Archives' website that will highlight iconic records by investigating specific historical topics.

09/22/09 Locust Valley Middle School Student Wins State Archives Award

Albany, NY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected Locust Valley Middle School student Paige Gugerty as the recipient of the 2009 Laura and Robert Chodos Award for Excellence in Student Research Using Historical Records, Grades 6-8 for her entry “Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Office Building.”

09/22/09 Department of Environmental Conservation Wins State Archives Award

Albany, NY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to receive the 2009 Annual Archives Award for Excellence in State Agency Records Management.

8/13/2009  Pre-1881 Birth Certificate Index Now Available

ALBANY -- Genealogists and other researchers will have even more information about New York births available to them now that a name index to 1,048 delayed birth certificates for events prior to 1881 has been placed in the New York State Archives and eight other locations around the state.

7/16/2009  State Archives Launches RSS Feed

In an effort to increase communication to the public, the New York State Archives has launched a news feed using RSS (Really Simple Syndication) technology.

7/1/2009 Governor Carey Photographs Digitized at New York State Archives

In an ongoing effort to make public records more accessible, the New York State Archives collaborated with former New York Governor Hugh L. Carey’s director of communications, William F. Snyder, and the Carey family to create an online digital collection of Carey photographs. Carey served as governor from 1975 to 1982.

5/5/2009  State Archives Launches La Escuela Electronica/The Electronic Schoolhouse

NEW YORK CITY -- A bilingual website for teachers focusing on the Latino experience in New York was introduced today by the   New York State Archives, a program of the New York State Education Department, and the Archives Partnership Trust at Centro   de Estudios Puertorriqueqos at Hunter College, part of the City University of New York. Time Warner supported this project.

2/5/2009  New York's Connections to Abraham Lincoln  

ALBANY -- Lincoln gave a speech in New York City that propelled him to the presidency, traveled to West Point for military advice from General Winfield Scott, answered charges from Erastus Corning and others that he was trampling the Constitution, and shared his box at Ford_s Theater with a couple from Albany on the night he was assassinated. These and other connections between Lincoln and New York State are explored in a special issue of New York Archives magazine, guest edited by Harold Holzer, co-chair of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and member of the board of the New York Archives Partnership Trust.  

12/3/2008  State Archives Sponsors 19th Annual Student Research Contest  

Albany, NY -- To encourage students to use historical records, the New York State Archives, a program of the State Education   Department, is sponsoring the 19th annual Student Research Awards. The deadline for entry is July 1, 2009 and the contest is open to all New York students in grades 4-12 who use historical records in their research projects.
