Onondaga County Public Library Wins State Archives Award

October 28, 2011

Albany, NY -- The New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust have selected the Local History/Genealogy Department of Archives of Central Library, Onondaga County Public Library to receive the 2011 Annual Archives Award for Program Excellence in a Historical Records Repository. This award is presented annually to an organization in the state that exemplifies excellence in an archival program.

The award was presented to Department Head Holly Sammons, Preservation Librarian Barbara Scheibel and Reference Librarian Kim Kleinhans at a luncheon ceremony at the Cultural Education Center in Albany on October 25, 2011.

The award commends the Local History/Genealogy Department for its outstanding archival program that contributes significantly to understanding Central New York’s history. The award recognizes the department for its work seeking, collecting and maintaining its vast historical and genealogical materials and its work developing online finding aids to improve access to these records.  It also commends the department’s records preservation efforts, and their outreach programs to historical societies, genealogical conferences, local history groups, and schools.

Previous award winners include Adirondack Museum Library (2010), Stony Brook University (2009), Essex County Historical Society (2008), Schenectady County Historical Society (2007), Huguenot Historical Society in New Paltz (2006), M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives at the University at Albany (2005), Onondaga Historical Association (2004), Canajoharie Library and Art Gallery (2003), and Hofstra University (2002).

“We are pleased to recognize the Local History/Genealogy Department for preserving the archival heritage of their regions, thus enabling historians and educators to use these archives to help bring important history to life,” said State Archivist Christine Ward.  “Through their efforts and those of other historical record repositories all over the state, the people of New York will have a far greater understanding of the Empire State’s past.”
