The State Archives holds several thousand cubic feet of paper records from correctional facilities. These records are described in Guide to Records of the Department of Correctional Services in the New York State Archives (1993). In addition, the Archives holds several data sets on magnetic tape that document the characteristics of the prisoner population from the mid-1950s through the 1980s [series 17619, 17620].
