2004 - Annual Spring Lecture Richard Dreyfuss and Harold Holzer in Ulysses S. Grant: Seen and Heard

An outstanding performance by Academy-Award winning actor Richard Dreyfuss and Civil War authority Harold Holzer re-introduced Ulysses S. Grant, a complex figure – hailed as a savior, reviled as a butcher – through his own words. Harold Holzer created this compelling program of words and images featuring the Civil War’s greatest hero and eighteenth President of the United States. Images by the leading artists, photographers, and printmakers of Grant’s day enhanced the narration.

Proceeds from this event were used to support history education at the New York State Archives. The Archives Partnership Trust appreciated the generous support of the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Appreciation also to Niagara Mohawk A National Grid Company; WAMC; WMHT; The Times Union; Chase; First Albany Capital; The Energy Association of New York State; Benchemark Printing, Inc.; The Book Outlet of Albany; Wojeski & Company CPAs, P.C.; and Chateau Lafayette Reneau Winery and the New York Wine and Grape Foundation. 2002-2003 - Literacy And Archives Project

The Archives Partnership Trust has received a grant from the Verizon Foundation to help the State Archives replicate a very successful pilot program it funded at Liberty High School in New York City. Funding from The J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation will support the teacher-training component of this project.

The Liberty High program used original documents such as diaries, letters, immigration transcripts, photographs, journalistic accounts, and supplementary texts to connect with newly arrived Asian and Latino students.

The archival materials were so relevant to their own immigrant experiences that the students were immediately engaged in a learning process that helped them develop learning skills and cultural literacy.

The Verizon Project will expand the web site and curriculum materials for teachers and literacy agencies in Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, and Yonkers.

"As a technology company, Verizon understands the tremendous impact technology can play in helping our young people achieve their goals. We are proud to partner with the New York State Archives in supporting this exciting and innovative program."
William Floyd, Director, Verizon Community Affairs for New York State.

Co-sponsors were: Chase Manhattan Bank, New York State Canal Corporation, Troy Savings Bank, Pioneer Savings Bank, Cohoes Savings Foundation, Inc., and First Albany Corporation. The greatest public works project of its time, the Erie Canal reflected the "can do" spirit that transformed New York into the Empire State.
