Larry J. Hackman Research Seminar For Public Historian Program
The New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust are accepting applications for the second annual Larry J. Hackman Research Seminar for Public Historians . The Seminar allows officially appointed public historians (including town, village, county, city, borough and community historians) to visit the State Archives in Albany for a three-day seminar. Dates for the Fall 2007 seminar are SEPTEMBER 17-19, 2008.
The Seminar will take place in the Archives' renovated research facility in the Cultural Education Center in Albany . Participants will visit the State Archives for 3 days and, with assistance from Archives staff, learn about resources to benefit their community history research.
An orientation on the first day will highlight use of original records at the Archives, emphasizing how state government records can aid community history research. During the following two days, archivists will assist participants with hands-on research work.
Elements of the seminar will include:

Overview of the State Archives (especially the archival records and orientation to the new reading room)

Searching the online catalog "Excelsior" to find records held by the State Archives (and other online services)

Using Archives finding aids, online databases, microforms and reader-printers

Ordering photocopies or interlibrary loan microforms
Funding covers reimbursement of travel and some meal expenses (at allowable state rate), lodging at a local hotel and a credit for as much as $50.00 for onsite photo duplication costs.
Applications must be postmarked by July 1, 2008 and will will only be accepted by regular U.S. Mail.
