The Harlem Hellfighters Collection

This collection consists of service records of soldiers who fought in the 15th New York National Guard regiment (later 369th Infantry, U.S. Army), commonly known as the “Harlem Hellfighters.”  The “Harlem Hellfighters” was the first African-American regiment to participate in World War I, being mustered into federal service in July 1917, and fought in such noteworthy campaigns as the Second Battle of the Marne and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.  The collection was compiled from the following record series:

13721 Abstracts of National Guard service in World War I, 1917-1919. New York State Adjutant General's Office.

13726 National Guard muster rolls, 1878-1954. New York State Adjutant General's Office.

B0814 Muster rolls of New York National Guard units that served in the United States Army during World War I, 1917-1918. New York State Adjutant General's Office.

Please note that only a portion of these series have been included in this digital collection. Other items exist that are not available online.
