Document Description
Boys ages 16-19 at the World War I NYS Military Cadet Corp summer camp in Peekskill receive mail, July 1917.

Historical Context
During the First World War, it was soon realized that the United States Army needed to train and enlist more soldiers.  At times, this meant preparing boys not yet of enlisting age for military service.  As seen in this photograph, one such facility was established in Peekskill, New York.  Here, boys between the ages of sixteen and nineteen would spend the summer learning infantry skills from camping to shooting.  The boys pictured here are receiving mail at the camp.
