Photograph of a Lock on the Black River Canal at Rome, 1920
New York State Archives, NYSA_A3045-78_A7362
Document Description
This is a Black River Canal lock, at Rome, 1920. Before the Barge Canal expansion, Erie Canal locks were small and usually constructed from cut stone. To construct the Barge Canal, New York State used concrete to build much larger locks that enabled boats with 100 times more cargo to pass through them, 1920.
