Document Showcase Classroom Activities:
Industrialization & Child Labor in New York
Here you will find materials for use in your classroom. Each document is presented with questions in a mini-DBQ (document-based question) format with recommended essay topics as a culmination activity. The questions are meant to encourage students to interpret the documents and draw conclusions. You may use them as they are, or you may adapt them to your own needs.
What is a DBQ? This brief overview describes Document-Based Questions and their use in New York State social studies assessments.
The following questions are designed to test your ability to work with historical documents. As you analyze the documents, take into account both the source of the document and the author’s point of view.
Using information from the following documents and your own knowledge of history, in Part A answer the questions that follow each listed document. Your answers to these questions will help you complete the writing assignment given in Part B.
Part A: Short Answer Questions
This DBQ is available as a printable worksheet in PDF format.
