Electronic media must be read with specialized equipment. The State Archives does not have a tape drive that can read these Exabyte Mammoth tapes. A specialized data recovery firm copied the files on these tapes onto other media and verified that the files were copied correctly. The State Archives also arranged to have the thermal flyovers on the VHS tapes, which are on the verge of becoming obsolete, converted to digital format.
