On September 11, 2001, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani ordered that debris removed from the World Trade Center site be transported to the recently closed Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island.

EarthData flew over Fresh Kills on September 19, one week after debris began to arrive at the landfill's West Mound, part of which is visible at upper left.
