Overview


The Empire State Forest Products Association records contain administrative records including the association's constitution; meeting minutes; and reports and correspondence regarding annual meetings, directors' meetings, and committee meetings. The records also contain speeches, legislative records, correspondence, photographs, and printed material. Committees represented in the records include "Keep New York Green"; Taxation; Forest Management; Wildlife; Recreation; Tree Farm; and Legislation. Topics of discussion include forest fire and pest control; the Bureaus of Forest Management, Tree Nurseries, and Forest Pest Control of the NYS Conservation Department; the association's role in the war effort (World War II); conservatio insect control; Veterans' Vocational Training projects; and land issues. Legislative records speak to policy matte relating to proposed federal and state legislation. Speeches from New York State Sen. Wheeler Milmoe on the Joint Legislative Committee on Natural Resources with Special Reference to the Forest Preserve; from Arthur Hopkins concerning the Northeastern Interstate Forest Fi Protection Commission; from Harold Ellis regarding the American Forest Products Industries, Inc; and from Maurice Goddard on the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters regarding forest management are included. The records also contain copies of papers read by New York State Conservation Department representatives on forest fir forest pest damage and control; operation of the Forest Practice Act; and salvage projects. Financial reports incorporating records of dues and assessments; membership lists; and event attendance lists (annual January banquet) are also included. The correspondence contains circular letters and general correspondence. Correspondents include Lyman A. Beeman; C. O. Brown; A.W. Budd; William D. Comings; Harry R. Curnow; Clarence Fisher; G.M. Francis; Augustus Low; Thomas F. Luther; Charles Morris; George Ostrander; A.B. Recknagel; George Sission; Nelson C. Brown; Lawrence J. Kugelman; Clyde Sykes; Stanley Hamilton; Howard A. Hanlon; George P. Kingsley; Hardy L. Shirley; Fr S. Simmons; and Thomas H. Stirling. The records also include a photograph of the tombstone inscription of Clifford Robert Pettis (1877-1927), the "Father of Reforestation in New York State," as well as photographs of individuals Gustave Lorey; Ira (or A E. Norris; F.L. Moore; George W. Sission, Jr.; and three unidentified men. Printed material includes copies of the National Recovery Administration's codes for the lumber and timber industries; pamphlets commemorating the 50th anniversary of the association; "From the Forest They Felled - Cities Grew" (H.A. Hanlon, Jan. 15, 1958); "Recent Developments and Relationships of the State Forest Preserve" (Joseph S. Illick); "Fifty Years of the Empire State Forest Products Association" (Nelson C. Brown and A.B. Recknagel, 1957); a brochure concerning forestry in NYS; articles on forestry and various aspects of conservation; and A.B. Recknagel's scrapbook of newspaper clippings discussing the wartime interest in the us of wood as fuel and his career during World War I.


Biographical Sketch


In 1906, the Adirondack Lumber Manufacturers and Shippers Association was formed to help trac declining inventories of Adirondack softwood and promote the emerging science of forestry. Three yea later, the name was changed to the Empire State Forest Products Association to reflect the addition of new members from other regions of the state and a growing statewide interest. As of 2005, the association had a diverse and growing membership of over 400 businesses and individuals. Members include forest landowners; timber harvesters; furniture companies; lumber manufacturers; pulp and paper companies; and other wood product manufacturers from across New York State. As of 2005, members owned and managed 1.2 million acres of New York forests and employed over one-third of t 65,000 individuals employed in the forest products industry in New York State (Source: http://www.esfpa.org/home.asp).
