Biographical Sketch

The New York State Museum (NYSM) had its beginnings in 1836, with the establishment of the state Geological and Natural History Survey. A State Cabinet of Natural History was established in 184 to care for and exhibit the collections from this survey, which in 1847 was expanded to include an historical and antiquarian (archaeological) collection. The first archaeological artifacts, with their accession records, were accepted from private donors in 1848. At present, archaeological artifacts and associated documentation are included within Anthropology collections, which are administered as par of the Research and Collections Division of the museum. Under State Education Law Sect. 233, the NYSM is mandated to care for these collections and to use them and make them available for researc and education. Archaeology collections currently consist of approximately 2 million artifacts from hundreds of New York sites. The accompanying documentation provides context and interpretive value to the artifacts. The archaeological excavations and surveys that resulted in these collections were carried out by private individuals, organizations such as local chapters of the New York State Archaeological Association, academic institutions during the course of field schools and research projects, museum staff archaeologists in the course of research activities, private Cultural Resource Management firms carrying out archaeological investigations under contract to private and public developers, and the NYSM Cultural Resource Survey Program (CRSP) staff conducting archaeologica research under contract to state agencies.
