Overview
This series consists of records of proceedings brought before the Warren County (N.Y.) Court and Supreme Cou pertaining to the acquisition of private property for purposes of highway development and improvement in Warren County. The records include petitions, complaints, affidavits, correspondence, exhibit material (in the form of maps a photographs), orders, final judgments, and notices of appeal with all court and filing date information stamped on the records. Information about the physical details of the land and its use also may be found in these records. In 1993, th Warren County Clerk's Office began an aggressive microfilming program, which saw the conversion to microfilm all civil action case files created beginning in 1917 (starting with case no. 1 and continuing). The official copy of recor for all civil actions ca. 1917-present is the microfilm format. This series, designated as "Civil Actions - Highway," also consists of the paper copy of highway-related actions. The paper documents have been retaine to enhance historical research. The online index (http://www.co.warren.ny.us/Records/CIVACTHIGHWAY.html) is intellectually arranged alphabetically by geographic location or site name. The index contains most if not all of the following information: geographic location or site name (highway, road, or bridge); format of the records (maps, photo etc.); date; location information; record series name (always Civil Actions - Highway); and department (always the County Clerk).
Biographical Sketch
The County Court has jurisdiction of more serious criminal matters and civil actions. New York State County Courts, located in each county outside New York City, handle felony criminal cases, guardianships, mental health applications, certain real estate matters, and civil cases that involve amounts of up to $25,000.00 in value. Both civil and criminal jury trials are held for County Court matters. The County Court also hears appeals of town court and city court decisions related to both criminal and civil matters, including small claims.
