In 1825 the Erie Canal was finished and New Yorkers were proud. They planned a big celebration to mark the event.

1830s | The Erie Canal At Work


By the 1830s the Erie Canal was up and running. The Canal helped some but caused problems for others.

In 1903 New Yorkers voted to enlarge the Erie Canal. The result was the Barge Canal, completed in 1918.
