Document 1. Erie and Barge Canals, Map.
This is a map of the Erie Canal in 1922. The map shows the original Erie Canal in red, and the 1918 Barge Canal expansion in a black and white checkerboard pattern.
If you look carefully, you can see that the Barge Canal expansion did not always follow the path of the earlier Canal.
The expansion needed to be much wider and deeper than the original Canal to accommodate larger ships and heavier traffic.
