Document 3. Canal at Lyons, New York, Photo.
This is a photograph of a boy driving a team of mules on the Erie Canal at Lyons, New York in 1910.
The forms of transportation shown in this photograph illustrate the dramatic technological changes that took place in the late nineteenth century.
Much bigger canal boats traveled the enlarged Erie Canal; iron bridges of many designs connected one side of the Canal to the other; and railroads operated side by side or competed with the slow, steady pace of the mule team.
